What are Porcelain Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells of super strong ceramic that bond directly to the front surfaces of your teeth in order to cover up imperfections with your smile. Many look to veneers as a solution to dramatically improve their darkly stained teeth, spaced or gapped teeth, short teeth, misaligned or crooked teeth, discolored crowns or older veneers, etc. They provide that “Hollywood” smile makeover that is very popular among people looking for a bright, attractive smile! In addition, people with porcelain veneers often look younger and healthier, and can have a higher level of self-esteem and self-confidence.

Best Dentist For VeneersThere are many benefits from having porcelain veneers. For one, they are highly stain resistant, so the bright white shade that you choose during the preparation process is the shade they should remain their entire life, giving you a permanently white smile. Second, ultra-thin veneers, such as LUMINEERS, are painless and do not require any shots or removal of sensitive tooth structure, unlike traditional veneers and crowns. Third, they will provide extra strength and support which helps to protect your tooth’s surface from becoming further damaged or eroded. Lastly, they are highly customizable and therefore you and the dentist can decide on the shape, size, color, etc. of your veneers in order to achieve the smile you desire.

The Process

The process to get porcelain veneers, which can give you the “Hollywood” style smile of your dreams, requires multiple appointments to your cosmetic dentist.

The initial visit usually entails a consultation to ensure that you are a good candidate for this procedure, and so that the dentist can fully understand what you are wanting to achieve with your smile. In addition, the dentist may even examine the teeth and take x-rays to make sure there aren’t any issues that would inhibit you from getting veneers. Just be sure that the cosmetic dentist that you choose has successfully completed numerous cases, and has before and after photos of his actual patients to show you.

The second appointment is where your dentist will prepare the teeth as well as take impressions and before photos for your porcelain veneers. With painless, ultra-thin veneers such as LUMINEERS, there is very little tooth structure that needs to be removed, and therefore no shots and no heavy drilling is generally required. After the impressions and photos are sent to a dental laboratory, they will fabricate your veneers and mail them back to the dental office, usually within 2-3 weeks.

At the third visit, your cosmetic dentist will first do a try-in for your veneers, which is performed with a temporary adhesive to ensure that your veneers have been created to your specifications and are the correct size, shape, color, etc. If, after the try-in, you and your dentist feel that they have met your expectations and you are pleased with the results, he/she will then permanently bond them to your teeth with a special cement made for porcelain veneers. Then the veneer is light cured which activates the chemicals in the bonding agent so that the veneer hardens quickly attaching it to the tooth.

After all of the veneers are bonded into place, your Indianapolis dentist will remove any excess cement and check your bite. If any adjustments to the bite are needed, they will be done at this time. Once this is complete your dentist may ask you to return within a week or two to make sure everything is responding well and that all of the cement between the teeth is removed. Then you’re off to enjoy your attractive new smile!
